Margaret & Laurent

“Count them now,” Laurent calmly said as he pushed the remaining plastic skewers towards Margaret.

“Three,” said Margaret. Pretty good for a four-year old, considering the quick-handed almost Three Card Monty style in which he switched them around and replaced them.

“Choose your favorite,” and she chose purple. “Where shall I put it?”

Margaret giggled, shrugged her shoulders and pointed to her own hand.

“That’s fine,” Laurent was happy she made a choice, but knew it wouldn’t hurt much. Margaret watched him stand up, walk into the other room and she heard a voice call out from beyond the wall, somewhere between a whimper and a cry, “Please! No!”
