I have a soft spot in my heart for road-rock. Those songs that when heard, make me want to get behind the wheel and drive far away. They are sprawling. The They are marching. They are driven.
This is the video for Death Cab’s new road-rock single “I Will Possess Your Heart.” I heard this on the radio last night on Indie 101.3 (Which is a radio station that changed hands from Clear Channel because they owned too many stations in the Los Angeles market. It started out as a rave/dance music station in 2003 before switching to one of the best radio stations around, but that’s another story. One that’s better told on wikipedia or something.) I was pleased the band may be returning to the territory they had begun to explore with “Transatlanticism.” The album, “Plans,” was a great album too, but I think “Transatlanticism” really had the epic sprawling qualities of 1970s “album rock” (albums better listened to as a whole instead of individual jams) and I personally found it to be moving.
I guess the director had the same feeling as me about the song as far as road-rock, but instead of a road trip it involves a young lady traveling the world. Lots of great scenery, local modes of transportation, and walking around. It is not the most inspiring or amazing video I’ve seen, but I still enjoy it. She seems pensive. What is she pondering? World hunger? Illuminance in foot candles? Someone trying to possess her heart just before a big trip around the world? Is he doing it because he really likes loves her or so she won’t screw around all over the planet Earth (best planet in the Solar System, brother). She seems to become less pensive and happier once Ben Gibbard starts to sing though. Why is the band playing in a frozen warehouse though? Is the unknown protagonist that cold and frozen without her?
The new album comes out May 13th and it’s entitled “Narrow Stairs.”
Cop it because it’s probably BANGIN’!
“I Will Possess Your Heart”
How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me
It’s like a book elegantly bound, but in a language that you can’t read - just yet
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
There are days when outside your window, I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective, when we’ll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won’t let you, let me down so easily, so easily
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart

I love DeathCab. Plans is an amazing album. I am excited for the new one to come out.
My heart has been, currently is, and will forever be possesed by this ninja simply named BUN….he has disappeared, and I have heard others have seen him. I think he is happy living a different life with different people. I am happy for him, but will always long for his companionship, for his friendship.
How I wish I could see the potential of us both. It’s like a book that is elegantly bound, but written in a language that can’t be read, just yet.
Maybe we’ll be able to read it together in years to come.
